Exploring Newport News

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Newport News, Virginia, you are in for a world of fun! The city sits on the banks of the beautiful James River, and offers lots of outdoor and nature related adventures, along with all the urban charm you could want from a small city. If you’ll be staying in Newport News with us, here are some sights and attractions we recommend checking out.

  1. The Mariner’s Museum
Civil War buffs will want to visit the Mariner’s Museum for their exhibit on the USS Monitor, an ironclad ship used in battle during the War. The Museum houses many artifacts from the ship, along with replicas of the sailor’s living quarters and more. After visiting the USS Monitor Center, tour the rest of the museum including the important Defending the Seas exhibit.
  2. Newport News Park
Spend a warm and sunny day exploring the large Newport News Park. No matter what type of outdoor activity you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find it here. Challenge yourself with vigorous biking and hiking trails, or slow it down and enjoy a lakeside picnic. Get out on the water and try your luck at fishing (licensed required) or rent a boat for a few hours of pleasure crafting. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars, the park is home to many species of birds.
  3. Busch Gardens
In nearby Williamsburg (only minutes away) you can have a day of thrilling adventures at the Busch Gardens amusement park. The theme park is divided into various European themed lands, in Scotland you’ll find the Loch Ness Monster roller-coaster and in New France, there is the Le Scoot flume ride!
  4. Endview Plantation
Get a taste of the old, Old South with a visit to the Endview Plantation. This plantation was built in 1769 and throughout the eras, it has taken on a number of different roles, from private home, to hospital, to the museum it is today. If you are lucky, there may be a Civil War Reenactment during your visit!
  5. Hilton Village
Explore the charming streets of Newport New’s Hilton Village. This is the place to come if you’re looking to dine at a local restaurant (we recommend seafood from the nearby waterways) or to do some souvenir shopping.  The people watching is excellent as well!
