6 Outdoor Things to Do in Memphis

Along the Mississippi River in southwest Tennessee, Memphis is known for many delights, sights, and attractions. But it’s no secret that much of what makes Memphis a truly remarkable place to visit is the beautiful weather, as well as the never-ending list of things to see and do outdoors.

We won’t lie – the summer temperatures in Memphis are hot. Really hot. But with the sun shining, it’s also an incredibly beautiful and exciting time to visit the city, with ample entertainment options to choose from, and many sights to see.

So if you find yourself in Tennessee this summer, be sure to include a stop in Memphis, where you’ll find not only a host of exciting outdoor things to see and do, but also two of our InTown Suites extended stay properties – perfect for an affordable visit to the city.

Stroll Along the Mississippi.

Lace up your walking shoes, grab a coffee or a picnic and set out to one of the beautiful parks bordering the famous Mississippi River. Walk along the water’s edge to witness the sights and sounds of one of the most famous rivers in the world.

Spend a Day at Overton Park.

A 342-acre public park in the very heart of Memphis, Overton Park offers a nine-hole golf course, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Memphis Zoo, Rainbow Lake, several playgrounds, and much more. It’s easy to spend a day here, so be sure to allot time for proper exploration!

Listen to Music on Beale Street.

Any visit to Memphis wouldn’t be complete without at least one evening spent on Beale Street to take in some live entertainment, as well as the remarkable part the street has played in both the city’s history as well as in the history of blues.

Take a stroll down Beale Street and see what there is to see – chances are, you’ll run into some outdoor live music that’ll be worthy of a stop – especially in the Handy Park area.

Explore the Botanic Gardens.

Boasting over 23 specialty gardens – and over 96 acres – the Memphis Botanic Garden is home to the likes of roses, cacti, irises, herbs, and much more. Bring the kids along and let them play and explore in the latest addition to the gardens – My Big Backyard.

Take an Adventure to the Mud Island River Park.

Take a stroll along the Riverwalk, an exact scale model of the Lower Mississippi River flowing from Cairo, Illinois, to New Orleans. Most cities and small towns along the river can be found on the scale model, which also boasts history and facts about the river along the way.

Visitors will also enjoy bike trails, pedal boats, rafts, and a host of other fun outdoor activities.

Catch a Ball Game.

Find yourself in Memphis on a sunny day? Head over to AutoZone Park, a minor league baseball stadium that the Memphis Redbirds call home. AutoZone is a beautiful park right in the centre of downtown Memphis offering plenty of great food options in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
