Most people think that Texas is hot year-round or wonder if Texas has a fall season? Texas actually has a lovely fall season, with cool weather and beautiful fall colors, making fall a perfect time to plan a trip to the Lone Star State!

Average temperatures range from a cool 66°F to a comfortable 78°F throughout the day and drop into the 40-50s during the evenings. The fall months in Texas are comfortable and make exploring outdoor activities and attractions worth the while.

1 | Football Games

Texans love their football and there’s no better place than the Lone Star State to see a live college or pro game! Grab tickets to a Dallas Cowboys game for some pro-football excitement or check out one of the many college teams in Texas with stadiums like Texas A&M University, University of Texas, or Rice University.

2 | ACL Music Festival

The biggest music festival in Austin, TX takes place over 2 weekends! That’s two chances for you to see amazing live performances from artists like Lizzo, Thom Yorke, James Blake, Third Eye Blind, and more! The 2019 festival is October 4-6 & 11-13, with tickets starting at $105 for general admission. Check out the ACL festival site for more info.

3 | Texas Pumpkin Patches

There are so many farms in Texas and some of them have amazing pumpkin patches that are worth making a trip to see. Grab the kids and spend the day outdoors at one of the many fantastic pumpkin patches. A few of our favorites include Barton Hills Farms, they have an incredible corn maze, Flower Mound Pumpkin Patch, and Love Creek Orchards (be sure to do their apple orchard tour!)

4 | The Texas State Fair

One of the most iconic fairs in the world is the Big Tex, Texas State Fair! People come from all over the world to ride the rides, play the games, and most importantly sample some of the most mouth-watering fair food. The Texas State Fair typically starts at the end of September and runs through mid-October.

5 | Fall Colors & Foliage

Yes, the leaves change beautiful colors in Texas, from fiery oranges, rusty reds, and somber yellows, and we know all the best places to see them! Visit Garner State Park for breathtaking views of oak, cypress and persimmon trees. Garner State Park also has hiking trails for our outdoor explorers. Lost Maples State Park is another great spot to see the leaves turn and is located on the Sabinal River. They also have many great outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, kayaking, and mountain climbing.

6 | Wurstfest

Feel like celebrating German culture? Check out one of the biggest and most unique festivals in Texas, the Wurstfest! From November 1-10th you and the family can enjoy authentic German music, dancing, beverages, and sausages. Tickets for adults are $15 and children 12 and under get in free.

7 | Get Spooky

Texas has a range of haunted houses, hayrides, and trails for those who love a good scare! A few of our favorite spooky sites include Pioneer Farms haunted Halloween trails and Scream Hollow Wicked Halloween Park.

8 | Big Bend National Park

There is no better time than the fall to enjoy the scenery and gorgeous views at Big Bend National Park.  Here you’ll get to take in the fall foliage, mountain views, and rushing water all in one beautiful park. Big Bend is an outdoor enthusiast dream with so much to do including ranger programs, hiking trails, scenic drives, and more!

9 | Texas Renaissance Festival

Step back in time where Kings and Queens ruled the land at the nation’s largest Ren Fest! At the Texas Ren Fest, you can dress up as a lady, lord, elf, or fairy, and explore medieval culture, food, music, and more! General admission tickets are $23.95 per adult and $11.95 for children 5-12, but the festival also offers packages and season tickets too.

10 | Festivals Galore

If there is ever a time to visit Texas, it’s definitely in the fall when all the best festivals are in full throttle. We’ve named a few in our top 10 overall things to do in Texas but we have a few more that are worth checking out too!
