How to See Indianapolis on a Budget

How to See Indianapolis on a Budget

Whether you’re here for business or for pleasure, Indianapolis is a wonderful city to visit and explore. And fortunately, it is also home to many affordable options for sightseeing, dining, attractions and accommodations.

So don’t break the bank – here are some great ways to save money when traveling in this capital city.

Sightseeing & Attractions

Walk Along the White River

A city built along the White River, a visit to Indianapolis just isn’t complete without taking a tour of the White River State Park. Covering over 250 acres, the Park is one of 6 designated cultural districts in Indianapolis. Stroll through the Park to enjoy green spaces, public art, segway tours, memorials, and much more.

Get on the Water at the Indiana Central Canal

If you’re interested in more outdoor activities, spend an afternoon at the Indiana Central Canal – a canal system dug in the early 1800s. Stretching north through White River State Park to 11th Street, the Canal provides an excellent environment for walking, running, biking and sightseeing. Rent a pedal boat or kayak and head out on the water!

Browse Eclectic Goodies at Broad Ripple

For a taste of local shops and culture, head over to the Broad Ripple Village, just 6 miles north of downtown Indianapolis. Here you’ll find all kinds of entertainment and shopping options, ranging from vinyl record shops, to vintage stores, to Big Hat Books, and many more.

Check out the Indiana State Museum

Though not free, the ticket prices for the Indiana State Museum are quite reasonable and certainly worth the cost. Spend a rainy afternoon touring the Museum, examining exhibits of art, science, and culture – specifically, the Age of Ice, Ancient Seas, Birth of the Earth, Enterprise Indiana, and the Crossroads of America.

Eating & Drinking

Staying at an extended stay property gives you the option of cooking your own meals – a nice alternative for the budget conscious traveler (especially on longer trips).

If you are interested in the culinary scene in Indianapolis, try some of these highly recommended budget eats:

  • Mann’s Grille – Fondly regarded as a local ‘truck stop’ type eatery, Mann’s is sure to delight with their delicious homestyle menu chock full of offerings under $10 each. Head to Mann’s for breakfast or lunch and enjoy the best of home cooking.
  • Long’s Bakery – Those with a sweet tooth will rejoice as they enjoy the fine delectables at Long’s. Think cinnamon fries, cakes, donuts and more – all at hard-to-beat prices.
  • The Original Aunt Polly’s Pizza – Hot pizza, ribs, wings, sandwiches and sides. What more could you want from your local pizza joint? Aunt Polly’s has been serving up goodness since 1970 – and is still going strong.
  • Caplinger’s Fresh Catch – A family run business in Indianapolis’ Northeast, Caplinger’s has been serving up fresh seafood for over 70 years. Come in for an affordable taste of alligator, clams, oysters, mussels, snow crab, and much more!
