Indianapolis’ Massachusetts Avenue Cultural District

Indianapolis’ Massachusetts Avenue Cultural District

The city of Indianapolis is home to six unique and exciting cultural districts. In one of our earlier posts, we discussed the highlights of Indiana Avenue. In this post, we’ll cover how to best spend a day in the Massachusetts Avenue district, also know as Mass Ave.

Start your day on Mass Ave with an invigorating workout at Invoke Studio. The fitness center focuses on yoga and Pilates classes, along with the newest it-class, barre. It’s a fun way to exercise, and it will leave you feeling guiltless about ordering dessert at dinner.

After class, maintain your energy by paying a visit to Natural Born Juicers, and grabbing one of their freshly pressed juices or smoothies. We find their The Refresher blended juice to be extremely refreshing.

Indianapolis’s Massachusetts Avenue district is home to two outstanding art galleries, including the Art Bank, features inspiring, mostly modern pieces of art, in a beautiful space that used to be an old bank building.  For Mid-Western inspired art, take a visit to The Frame Shop & Franklin Barry Gallery. We won’t be surprised if you end up picking up, a new piece for your home.

Be sure to take some time and explore the shops of Massachusetts Avenue. The district has a wide range of independent stores and boutiques that you won’t find anywhere else. Not only does Indy Reads Books have a great selection of novels, but the profits go to a non-profit organization that helps improve the literacy skills of the community. Need to find a gift for the person who has everything? Take a spin into Arts a Poppin LLC, home to many one-of-a-kind items and gifts.

For the evening’s dinner, sit down for a delicious, local meal at R Bistro. The restaurant is run by two women who focus on local and seasonal cuisine. They change the menu weekly, depending on what they find at the market, so you’ll find a few favorite dish every time you dine there. The Bistro is popular with locals and visitors alike, so we recommend making a reservation.

End your day on Mass Ave with a little (lot) laughter. Take in a performance by ComedySportz Indianapolis, an incredible improv group. They base their entire show around audience suggestions, so if you have an idea for an act, don’t be afraid to speak up. Rather end the evening by listening to live music? Pop into the Chatterbox Jazz Club, the venue features live music every night of the week.

We hope you enjoy your time exploring Indianapolis. Let us know if you have any other favorites in the district!
