Naval Station Norfolk

People from all over the world travel far and wide to visit Naval Station Norfolk. Located at Hampton Roads, just a short drive from InTown Suites Norfolk, this naval station is the largest in the world.

This 100-year-old naval station came into fruition in 1917 and by 1918 was home to 34,000 enlisted men. Over the years it has been the operational site for important events like recovering Apollo 7. In 2017, Naval Station Norfolk celebrated its centennial birthday at the historic Pennsylvania House. Today Naval Station Norfolk is home to 83,000 active duty military personnel and occupies 3,400 acres on Sewell’s Point peninsula.

Naval Station Norfolk port is home to over 60+ operational ships and supports the United States Fleet Forces Command operating in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as, the Mediterranean Sea. It is also home to over 30+ aircraft and has 275 incoming/outgoing flights a day –that’s 1 flight every 6 minutes! Their Air Mobility Command also carries a whopping 150,000 passengers a year and freights over 260,000 tons of cargo each year.

The naval station is open to the public and offers guided tours all year round. From November through March only one tour per day is available, but during the spring a summer months multiple tour times are available. Each tour is 45 minutes long and guided by a Navy personnel. During the tour, you will have an opportunity to see the grounds, destroyers, submarines, aircraft and more! Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children –be sure to bring cash only.

The Naval Station Norfolk is a quick light rail ride from our extended stay in Norfolk. You can hop on the Tide at Military & Lowery, hop off at Gilbert & Galley, and from there it’s a 2 block walk to the naval station.
