Nashville is well known for its musical roots, but if you’re looking for something to do that’s outside the realm of music, why not check out The Parthenon in Centennial Park? It is the centerpiece of downtown Nashville and just a short drive from many of our extended stay hotels in the area.
The Parthenon is a full-scale replica of the original beautiful Parthenon that was built in ancient Greece. The replica was originally built in the 1920s and represents classical architecture. The sculptures adorning the pediments were even cast from the originals in Greece. The full-scale Athena Parthenos wasn’t added to the Parthenon until 1982 after a fund was raised to have her added. Athena stood stark white until she was gilded in 2002.
As a bonus for visitors, the Parthenon is not only a built piece of architecture it is also Nashville’s biggest art museum. The museum houses a collection of 19th and 20th-century American painting donated by James M. Cowan in their The Cowan Collection of American Art Gallery. The museum also features multiple temporary exhibits and shows throughout the year in their East and West Galleries.
