When most think of Louisville, Kentucky, the well-known Kentucky Derby is probably what comes to mind. But, did you know that there are SO many other exciting attractions that make your trip worth it… and they are free or cheap to do! We’ve put a list together of our favorite free things to do in Louisville, KY.

Waterfront Park

One of the most popular spots in Louisville is Waterfront Park. It’s located on the Downtown Wharf of Louisville and you can easily spend an entire day there! Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy people and boat-watching in the area, it’s absolutely free to visit! Other family-fun activities include renting bikes, kayak and paddle board tours, and splashing around in the waterplay area (also free). Another great free thing to do at the park –check out the amazing Big Four Bridge! It’s a 2-mile walk round trip and worth every step. Walk it in the evening and see it all lit up with LED lights! The park is open all year round from 6:00 am to 11 pm, daily, and the Big Four Bridge is open 24/7.

Muhammad Ali Center

Learn all about the boxing legend, Muhammad Ali, at the Muhammad Ali Center. Here you’ll experience a historical look at the greatest boxer of all time through multimedia. The center is made up of galleries and exhibits that encompass Ali’s six core principles: confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect, and spirituality. The Muhammad Ali Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and on Sunday from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Though this isn’t a free attraction the prices of admission are reasonable. Admission into the center is $14 for adults and $9 for children 6-12. For more information about visiting the center, be sure to check out their website.

Speed Art Museum

The Speed Art Museum is one of the most unique art museums in the nation. When you visit you’ll experience a variety of art from contemporary to modern pieces. The best part, you can visit the museum FREE on Sundays thanks to the generosity of museum donors! You can even listen to their podcast to get more content while walking through the permanent collections and current exhibitions. This museum also features events and programs like baby play-dates, teen gallery sketching, drop-in tours, and more. Speed Art Museum is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Friday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Cherokee Park

Over 400-acres make up the beautiful Cherokee Park, a favorite spot among Louisville locals. Here you can walk or jog the 2.4-mile loop and enjoy the serenity of your surroundings. They also have picnic areas with grills, horse riding trails, fishing spots, playgrounds, tennis courts and more; all free and open to the public! Cherokee Park also sometimes features events like full moon gatherings, walking tours, volunteer clean-up.
