When you’re on the road this summer, you’ll likely have some downtime to fill while traveling, waiting for meetings or appointments, etc. Put some of that spare time to good use and sneak in a little reading. 1. Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America – Erik Lason
This book is so intriguing that you won’t believe it’s actually non-fiction. The author takes you back in time to Chicago in 1933 when the city was getting ready to host the World’s Fair. The book is written about two important men, the man who designed the Fair, and the serial killer who used the fair to lure in out-of-town women. The book reads like a suspense novel, but is actually a history lesson.
2. The Walking Dead – Robert Kirkman
The AMC Series is one of the hottest shows on television. Read the comics that started it all. The Walking Dead follows Rick Grimes, a former sheriff who wakes up in a hospital bed and discovers the world is now full of zombies. The comics are set largely in Georgia with lots of action in Atlanta in the first few editions. There are currently 22 volumes, providing hours of entertainment!
3. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom – Cory Doctorow
Will Disney World be around for future generations? The author of this science-fiction novel thinks so. Set in Orlando in the 22nd Century, this book sees the protagonist get to live out his dreams of living in Disney World, while new groups try and retool the rides to make them more modern.
4. Last Train to Memphis – The Rise of Elvis Presley – Peter Guralnick
The first of two books tracing the history of The King of Rock n’ Roll. This biography chronicles his early childhood years in Memphis, traces the beginnings of his music career in Nashville and concludes at the point when enters mega stardom. The author gives some great insights into what made Elvis into a timeless legend.
5. The Glass Menagerie – Tennessee Williams
Read the play that brought fame to Tennessee Williams. Set in Saint Louis in the 1930’s, this play tells the story of the Wingfield family, and shows how they are coping, years after the father of the family disappeared. Even if you’ve seen the play, it’s worth a read – it’s a classic for a reason.
