Tips for a Great Christmas Away from Home

Tips for a Great Christmas Away from Home

Keep yourself occupied with a few of the things that make the season bright. We’ve rounded up a couple tips for how to have the best Christmas when you’re away.

1. Connect with family.

Voice or Video.

With unlimited technology at our fingertips, staying in touch has never been so simple. Schedule in time when you know family or friends will be gathering to join them virtually – either by phone, or perhaps via video on FaceTime or Skype. It’s the perfect opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and to enjoy a little quality time with them over the holidays.

Reunite with friends & family.

Christmas is the perfect time to reunite with past friends or distance family members. If there is someone you know living close by, send them an email or give them a call to wish them well over the holidays. Any connection – even a distant one – can help make you feel more at home if you’re traveling over Christmas.

2. Prepare a nice meal.

Enjoy a little indulgence over the holidays with a delicious, festive meal. (After all, you’re only a Google search away from finding plenty of hotel or restaurant holiday meals nearby). But if you’re looking to prepare something yourself, we have just the thing.

Try these recipes for a no-fuss, delicious festive meal, featuring turkey legs with roasted root vegetables, sour cream mashed potatoes with chives, and lemony green beans with fried onions. Sub out the pumpkin pie for something a little more traditional at Christmas, like a fruitcake, pecan pie, or some squares.

3. Give.

Giving is part of what makes the holiday season so special. Doing something nice for those around you is what it’s all about – it gets you in the festive spirit and will make you feel good on Christmas day. So no matter where you are – if you’re in a hostel, an extended stay property, hotel, or elsewhere – find a way to make giving part of your Christmas tradition.

Try organizing a secret santa with other travelers, leaving a few small gifts for others you’ve met along the way, or giving back to the community you’re visiting by volunteering at a food bank, church service, and so on.

4. Wait until Christmas day.

If you receive gifts or cards from loved ones, you may be tempted to open them right away. Resist the urge! Save anything given to you to open on Christmas morning, giving you something to look forward to and making the day extra special.

5. Embrace local festivities.

There’s no better way to celebrate the season than by getting out to the local celebrations in the community you’re visiting, whether it be a parade, nativity scene, caroling group, or christmas lights drive.

6. Watch a Christmas movie.

Snuggle up to enjoy a holiday flick! Whip up some delicious hot chocolate and settle in to enjoy  one of your favorite Christmas movies of all time. Looking to change things up? Explore Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the 25 Best Christmas Movies.
