Top 5 Fall Drives in America

It’s no secret that the US is full of beautiful sights and breathtaking scenery. And fall in many of the cities and towns across the country offers a unique type of beauty — often crisp, colorful, and joyous. This fall, let Mother Nature impress and delight. Use this guide to hit the road and see where adventure takes you.

1. Blue Ridge Parkway – Virginia & North Carolina.

Dubbed “America’s favorite drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway is a slow-paced, relaxing drive where you’ll not only spot fall foliage, but also long-range vistas, up-close views of the mountains, and the stunning landscapes of the Appalachian Highlands.

Close to 500 miles in length, drivers will also enjoy farmsteads, hardwood forests, and many more outstanding views. Points of interest include Price Lake, the Blue Ridge Music Center, and mountain towns including Floyd, Galax, and more.

2. Route 112 – New Hampshire.

While the Kancamagus Highway is a well-known fall foliage route, Route 112 is a little lesser known and provides ample opportunities for anyone interested in trying their hand at photography. 

Head down Route 112 west, past the quaint town of Woodstock, New Hampshire. From there, unpack the camera and continue to Kinsman Notch at Beaver Pond for breathtaking photo opps. At nearly 57 miles in length, leaf peepers are sure to be delighted.

3. Great River Road – Mississippi River.

A single route along the Mississippi from head to toe, the Great River Road is an iconic American road boasting 10 states bordering the Mississippi. Embark on this journey and you’ll enjoy everything scenic from farmland, to meadows, limestone cliffs, forests, cypress swamps, and so much more.

Many miles long, the road travels in and out of towns, and even crosses the river every so often, creating the perfect background for a beautiful fall drive.

4. Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway – Colorado.

Following along the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway, drivers delight in the tapestry of colors as the Aspen trees turn their beautiful golden hues. Take in one of the most extraordinary sights from mountain-top, reached by taking the 63-mile Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway, beginning off Route 70.

Follow along to discover lakes, open fields of wildflowers, forests, canyons, and so much more. Points of interest include Cedaredge and Pioneer Town, Applefest Gala, and more.

5. Mad River Scenic Byway – Vermont.

A foray through the heart of Vermont, the Mad River Byway passes through picturesque towns, around farms, famous ski areas (think Sugarbush and Mad River Glen), as well as many historic sites. The drive will take you along two of the state’s most scenic routes, numbered 100 and 100B. Travel to the top of the Appalachian Gap (Route 17), where you’ll enjoy a landscape of mountain ridges, a winding river valley, quaint villages, and much more.
